Overuse Injuries

This is an injury that occurs due to overuse of muscle and bone without adequate rest periods.

In the developing player, growth of muscles and bone is ongoing. Types of overuse injuries therefore differ from that of the adult and commonly are located at centres of ossi cation (growth plates).

The most common sites of overuse injuries affecting rugby players include:

  • Front of the knee
  • Back of the ankle
  • Front of hip/pelvis (less frequent)
