Ruptured Liver

The liver is located in the right upper abdomen, just below the ribcage. Its tissue is friable (delicate) and it may rarely be ruptured by a blow to this area.

  • Trauma to right upper abdomen

Presentation

  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Light-headedness
  • Fainting
  • Drowsiness
  • Abdominal distension (swelling)

Diagnosis

  • CT scan

Management

  • Transfer to hospital immediately
  • Minor liver injuries can be controlled with rest and observation in hospital
  • Large liver ruptures may require an operation
