Ruptured Liver
The liver is located in the right upper abdomen, just below the ribcage. Its tissue is friable (delicate) and it may rarely be ruptured by a blow to this area.
Cause
- Trauma to right upper abdomen
Presentation
- Severe abdominal pain
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Light-headedness
- Fainting
- Drowsiness
- Abdominal distension (swelling)
Diagnosis
- CT scan
Management
- Transfer to hospital immediately
- Minor liver injuries can be controlled with rest and observation in hospital
- Large liver ruptures may require an operation
